Why Do We Offer Gender-Specific Rehab for Men?
Many co-ed drug and alcohol rehabs exist and can help a lot of people. Why a men’s rehab center? Because often males do better in a treatment plan unique to their gender. As enlightened as we have become as a society, men still face expectations to be stoic, strong, and silent when it comes to facing a serious problem like addiction. That can make it difficult to open up in mixed-gender situations and speak openly about their issues and emotions.
Men are often expected to avoid appearing weak in front of women. Unfortunately, for many that means having difficulty opening up in a treatment program that includes women. During the absence of women, men tend to feel more comfortable talking about their experiences and feelings. This allows for quicker progress and a more comfortable time talking about the events and emotions that contribute to the person falling prey to addiction.
Benefits of Separate Rehab for Men
There are several positive outcomes that happen with gender-specific treatment for men. The benefits of attending a men’s rehab center include:
- The relaxed atmosphere that comes with being among males only.
- Male peer support allows both give and take to help each man move forward in their recovery.
- The men can feel more comfortable discussing topics like violent behavior and criminal acts without women present.
- No pressure to impress or temptation to flirt with females.
- Being able to talk about feeling weak or helpless without worrying that women will judge them.
- Therapy can target ways that men abuse substances and approach their recovery that differ from how women experience addiction and treatment.
Drug and alcohol addiction impact the lives of many men in the United States. When left untreated, addiction can negatively affect families and communities as well. However, there is hope for men who need recovery.

Our Men's Rehab Programs
Hand in Hand Recovery Center offers different levels of care to help men at each stage of their recovery. Our men’s rehab center provides the following types of care:
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
Participation in our partial hospitalization program (PHP) takes place several hours per day on weekdays. It helps people who have completed detox or residential care and need focused, full-time care during the day.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Participation in our intensive outpatient program (IOP) takes fewer hours than PHP. Sessions are held for half a day several days per week and work well for those who have completed PHP or don’t need it.
Outpatient Program (OP)
When someone completes higher levels of care, they are ready for our outpatient program (OP). This level of care only requires attending a few therapy sessions per week.
Detox and Residential Care
We do not offer this type of live-in care at our facility, but we do partner with several effective residential treatment facilities and detox centers. This allows us to help men find a residential plan they can complete before joining us for follow-up care.
How We Help Men Find Recovery
Hand in Hand Recovery Center offers multiple types of therapy as part of our men’s rehab center. The choices for therapies we provide include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: This helps people understand the correlation between their feelings and thoughts and their resulting actions.
- Holistic Therapy: This approach treats each person as in need of help transforming and healing their bodies, spirits, emotions, and mind.
- Experiential Therapy: The men participate in therapeutic activities designed to help them express themselves. Activities include equine therapy, art therapy, adventure therapy, and music therapy.
- Anger Management: This teaches men to deal with their anger in healthy ways while still maintaining their sobriety.
- Family Therapy: A therapist leads family members in conversations to help them understand the challenges of addiction. They also learn how to communicate more effectively and support their loved ones.
- Psychoeducational Groups: The members learn about the effects of addiction, build new skill sets, and provide valuable peer feedback.
- Trauma Therapy: Experiencing trauma can cause a man to turn to abusing substances to help him deal with the symptoms. Trauma therapy allows them to process their trauma and put it to rest.
- Life Skills: Someone who has spent a long time mired in addiction often can use learning life skills to help them get back on their feet. Life skills include meal planning, budget planning, physical fitness, self-care, and assistance finding housing.
- Medication Management & MAT: This combines behavioral counseling with prescription medications. The meds help treat the symptoms of withdrawal and any co-occurring mental illnesses like anxiety or depression.
- Aftercare: Once a person completes treatment with us, we provide regular check-ins and suggestions for ways to continue supporting their sobriety.
